Eating my way through the things I never tried
Everyone has things they’ve decided they dislike without ever really trying them.
For me it’s ongoing subscriptions and metered billing. I sign up for Netflix, get uneasy, cancel, repeat. The thought of charges quietly continuing even if I died makes me want to stay as unencumbered as possible.
Having my own place on the web, or paying for AI by the API call — I avoided those the same way. “What if the costs are uncapped?” I’d think, and the plan would die. Try, give up, repeat, for years.
But the me of today has Fable. The pre-purchase anxiety counseling, the guardrails against runaway bills, the tedious procedures — nearly all of it can be delegated now. The time had finally come to eat the foods I’d sworn off. I started paying for API calls a little while ago, and was moved by the freedom of being able to build a small service of my own the moment I want one. And now, at last, the thing I’d wanted forever and never done: I bought my own domain. A house of my own on this enormous internet. Another step up the staircase to adulthood.
