A gravestone marked "cheap and necessary are different things"

I do this every time. Something’s cheap, I’m drawn in, I buy a thing I don’t particularly need, I regret it.

This time it was an OLED gaming display that had gone on sale. My current 13-inch portable display is a bit small and tops out at 60Hz; I’m getting a Steam Machine anyway; re-plugging cables back and forth with the PS5 is a chore — so, you know, might as well.

So I bought it. The colors are gorgeous, everything’s buttery, the cable-swapping chore is gone — and the physical presence of the thing is overwhelming. A slab the same size as my Studio Display, sitting right next to it, radiating wrongness. And at 27 inches the eye travel is huge: to take in the whole screen I have to game in a weird, slumped-down posture.

Ughhh. A little more use, and then I suppose it’s off to a new home.
